Philippians 2:5-7: Have this Attitude

Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

Have this attitude

It literally says “think this” among yourselves.

Attitude is something so ingrained in our character that it has become part of our way of life.

Choices determine habits, which over time become character, which over time becomes our attitude or outlook or life-view.

People notice our attitude

So our friends may notice our attitude. It affects how people view us.

Among ourselves

But when Paul uses the words “among yourselves” he’s saying All of you have this attitude.

Brothers and sisters in Christ should not spitefully use each other

Self-appointed “Fruit Inspectors” tend to have a rebellious, dishonoring attitude.

They forget “by what measure you use, you will be judged”.

We are supposed to build up, equip, and encourage in service to God

Which was also in Christ Jesus

Jesus is our ultimate example of Christian behavior.

Jesus is our ultimate model of humility in service to God.

Jesus existed in the form of God

Jesus was of one substance, one form with God. In very nature God, in essential nature and character, God.

Jesus shared glory with the Father and in the Presence of the Father before time began.

Jesus did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped

Jesus, already having this equality with God didn’t think that it was something that He had to clutch onto or something to be used for His own advantage.

But emptied Himself

Jesus emptied Himself, made Himself less in order to serve.

This is what Christian Humility is all about

How can I empty myself to serve?

taking the form of a bond-servant

We are also suffering servants.

We are to Take up our cross and follow Jesus
