{"id":2876,"date":"2020-11-15T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-15T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mvcog.org\/wp\/?p=2876"},"modified":"2020-11-21T18:50:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-22T01:50:51","slug":"ruth-4-9-12-kinsman-redeemer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mvcog.org\/wp\/2020\/11\/15\/ruth-4-9-12-kinsman-redeemer\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruth 4: 9-12 Kinsman Redeemer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sunday Service at Mountain Valley Church of God - Ruth 4: 9-12 Kinsman Redeemer\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/twhL58TTgVk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mvcog.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ruth-4vs9-12-outline.pdf\">Ruth-4vs9-12-outline<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mvcog.org\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Ruth-4vs9-12-outline.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button\" download>Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong><strong>Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, \u201cYou are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boaz calls on both the elders and the crowd to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">witnesses<\/span>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong><strong>Furthermore, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so&nbsp;that the name of the deceased will not be eliminated from his brothers or from the&nbsp;court of his&nbsp;<em>birth<\/em>&nbsp;place; you are witnesses today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then Boaz says, \u201cNext, and more <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">importantly<\/span>, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon.&nbsp; By marrying Ruth, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">children<\/span> can be produced who will continue the family line, and inherit their families\u2019 land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Granted Ruth\u2019s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">petition<\/span>, back in chapter 3 verse 9 when she asked Boaz to \u201c<strong>spread your garment over your servant, for you are a redeemer.\u201d<\/strong>-when she\u2019d proposed marriage to him.&nbsp; It has provided both the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">security<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">reward<\/span> for Ruth.&nbsp; Naomi had prayed in chapter 1 verse 9 <strong>May the Lord grant that you may find a place of rest, each one in the house of her husband.\u201d&nbsp; <\/strong>And affirmed her need for security, in verse 3:1 when she said <strong>\u201cMy daughter, shall I not seek&nbsp;security for you, that it may go well for you?<\/strong>&nbsp; Boaz had also prayed for Ruth in chapter 2 verse12 <strong>12 May the Lord reward your work, and may your wages be full from the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.\u201d<\/strong>, acknowledging that her refuge is in the Lord, the God of Israel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong><strong>And all the people who were&nbsp;in the court, and the elders, said, \u201c<em>We are<\/em>&nbsp;witnesses. May the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Lord<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;make the woman who is coming into your home&nbsp;like Rachel and Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and may you achieve&nbsp;wealth in Ephrathah and&nbsp;become famous in Bethlehem.<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>Moreover, may your house be like the house of&nbsp;Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the&nbsp;descendants whom the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will give you by this young woman.\u201d<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is another blessing or prayer in the book of Ruth that is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fulfilled<\/span>.&nbsp; It\u2019s the story of Ruth that binds the family of David to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bethlehem<\/span> in the Old Testament.&nbsp; It\u2019s why we\u2019re not surprised later when Samuel goes to Bethlehem to find David and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anoint<\/span> him king.&nbsp; And of course, it\u2019s because David was from Bethlehem that Mary and Joseph go <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">there<\/span> to pay their taxes and it\u2019s there where Jesus is born, fulfilling <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">prophecy<\/span>-Micah 5:2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They bless her saying, <strong>may your house be like the house of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah, through the descendants who God will give them<\/strong>.&nbsp; Ruth and Boaz\u2019 children will be legitimate, because Boaz is doing his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">duty<\/span> to produce an heir for the house of Elimelech.&nbsp; The Bethlehemites were of the tribe of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Judah<\/span>, and were also of the house or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">family<\/span> of Perez.&nbsp; Tamar was also a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">foreigner<\/span>, one of another nation, as Ruth was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cares<\/span> about all of the Ruth\u2019s of the world.&nbsp; All of those who are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">outcast<\/span>, and poverty-stricken, and foreigners are cared about as much by God, as the native sons of Israel, and will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">accepted<\/span> by His grace, on the basis of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">faith<\/span> in Him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We talk and sing about Jesus as our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">redeemer<\/span>, but many of us don\u2019t know exactly what that means.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Hebrew word Goel is the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">root<\/span> word behind many of these words that we\u2019ve said are key words in the book of Ruth.&nbsp; The words kinsman, redeem, redeemer, close-relative, closest relative, buy, bought, and redemption all come from this root which means to redeem, avenge, revenge, ransom and to do the part of a kinsman\u2014to redeem his kin from difficulty or danger.&nbsp; And as we\u2019ve seen the last two weeks, it carries with it the idea that it is a duty or privilege to do this for a near relative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exodus 6:6 <strong>Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, \u2018I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the labors of the Egyptians, and I will rescue you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments.&nbsp; <\/strong>And so, we see that God is going to rescue the Israelites from slavery\u2014buy them back as it were.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now God had made a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">covenant<\/span>, a promise with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (also known as Israel) and their descendants <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">forever<\/span> and promised them 2 things.&nbsp; First, a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">seed<\/span> through which the nations of the earth would be blessed along with Israel.&nbsp; And of course, this is the Messiah, the Lord Christ Jesus, who would save us all from our sins.&nbsp; The second promise was the permanent possession of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">land<\/span> of Canaan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in our verses in Ruth today, we find Boaz acting as this kinsman-redeemer, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">following<\/span> God\u2019s law as to the way things should be done, and fulfilling <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">all<\/span> of the roles of the kinsman redeemer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, God has provided for redemption of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">land<\/span> when it\u2019s sold off, and redemption of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">people<\/span> when they\u2019re sold off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we go back to Exodus 12, we see that God commanded each household to slaughter an unblemished male <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lamb<\/span>, and as it says in verse 7 <strong>7 Moreover, they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel [l]of the houses in which they eat it.&nbsp; <\/strong>And as the destroyer came through Egypt and looked at each house to kill the firstborn, God said in verse 13 <strong>13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will come upon you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. <\/strong>Which is why we call this memorial feast <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Passover<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul makes the point that Jesus is our Passover <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lamb<\/span> to the Corinthians in 1 Cor 5:7 when he urges them to stop sinning and <strong>7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.&nbsp; <\/strong>The prophet John the Baptist recognized Jesus in John 1:29 saying <strong>\u201cBehold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/strong>We find Peter referring to Jesus as a \u201c<strong>lamb without blemish or defect\u201d<\/strong> in 1 Peter 1:19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so we see that Jesus is our Passover lamb, the One by whose death <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Redemption<\/span> is accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And just as Boaz was met the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">criteria<\/span> to be Ruth\u2019s kinsman redeemer, Jesus meets the criteria to be OUR kinsman-redeemer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.The one who was to be the redeemer he had to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">eligible<\/span> to redeem.&nbsp; He had to be a near kinsman.&nbsp; Because Jesus came to earth as a little baby.&nbsp; He is mankind\u2019s near-kinsman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.The one who was to be the redeemer had to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">able<\/span> to redeem\u2014have the means to redeem.&nbsp; Jesus is qualified to be called One \u201cwithout blemish\u201d because His life was completely free from sin (Hebrews 4:15).&nbsp; And because God was His father through the Immaculate Conception, He was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">qualified<\/span> to be the redeemer because He was not born with original sin, as all of us were.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.The one who was to be the redeemer had to be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">willing<\/span> to redeem\u2014he could choose to redeem or not to redeem.&nbsp; And Jesus chose to go to the cross.&nbsp; In Hebrews 12:2, we are reminded that<strong> Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.&nbsp; <\/strong>As Titus 2:14 tells, us:&nbsp; Jesus <strong>gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s when we realize our need for Him as Redeemer-that we need someone to rescue us, to save us, to buy us back from where we have fallen, that He reveals Himself as our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Redeemer<\/span>, our Messiah.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can be forgiven, justified, redeemed.&nbsp; But there\u2019s only <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one<\/span> way\u2014through the one way that God has provided.&nbsp; Through Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the Israelites, we are redeemed from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">death<\/span> by the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">blood<\/span> of a lamb.&nbsp; Like the Israelites we are redeemed from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">slavery<\/span> to sin.&nbsp; Like the Israelites, we are have <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">faith<\/span> in God\u2019s Word, and following it are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">justified<\/span> by our faith.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>9&nbsp;Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, \u201cYou are witnesses today that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2876","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-services"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":2829,"url":"http:\/\/mvcog.org\/wp\/2020\/10\/04\/ruth-18-23-may-he-who-took-notice-of-you-be-blessed\/","url_meta":{"origin":2876,"position":0},"title":"Ruth 18-23:  May He who took notice of you be blessed.","author":"Robert","date":"October 4, 2020","format":false,"excerpt":"https:\/\/youtu.be\/3a3VtQnMsgg Ruth-2-vs-18-23-OutlineDownload 18 She took it up and went into the city, and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned.
